What is DMZ in Modern Warfare 4?

DMZ is Modern Warfare 4's extraction shooter mode — a third way to play alongside the Campaign and Multiplayer. Instead of round-based respawning matches, you deploy into the Hajin Exclusion Zone as one of 20 three-operator squads, take on contracts, loot weapons and valuables, and try to get out alive. Extract and you keep what you carried out; don't, and the run is over. Solo queue is supported, and solo players are primarily matched against other solos. DMZ opened in early access on October 20, 2026; the full game launches on October 23 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2.

If you have played a battle royale, the scale will feel familiar — the rhythm will not. There is no shrinking circle to chase and no single victory screen: the win condition is yours to define. Get in, get the job done, get out.

The DMZ extraction loop, step by step

Every run follows the same five-step loop: prepare between runs, infiltrate the exclusion zone, work contracts, loot with intent, and extract. Contracts are the glue — story missions and dynamic operations that fund better gear while pushing the mode's narrative forward. The map sets the risk curve: 13 major POIs, 18-plus named areas and 7 fortresses (including The Citadel, the zone's Critical threat) are layered by threat level, so the richest loot sits exactly where resistance is heaviest. When it's time to leave, you have three ways out — the Twin Heli, a Fulton balloon or a flare exfil — plus buy-station options. The how-to-play guide walks the full loop with first-run tips, and the extraction points page details every way out.

How MW4 DMZ differs from Multiplayer and Campaign

Coming from Multiplayer, DMZ is slower, larger and consequential in a way standard modes are not: one continuous infiltration across a full open map instead of timed rounds, with AI-held fortresses and hostile squads sharing the zone alongside you. Progression works differently too — your FOB carries development between runs through traits, crafting and the long road to three mastery camos. It plays closer to a tactical operation than a deathmatch: you decide when to push, when to lie low, and when to call it and exfil with what you have.

How to start playing DMZ MW4

DMZ is not free to play: it ships inside Modern Warfare 4, which starts at $69.99 for the Standard Edition or $99.99 for the Vault Edition, and the game is not on Game Pass at launch. Pick an edition, run the download and install, and you can queue into the exclusion zone solo or as a trio. Our access guide breaks down exactly what you need to buy — and what you don't.

This site is built differently from most launch-week wikis: every fact is dated and checked against a named source, and pages go live when they can be verified — not before. Start with the Hajin map guide and its 13 POI breakdowns, or jump to the FAQ for quick answers. Launch-week pages — server status, error codes, solo matchmaking, tier lists and loadouts — fill in during the October 23–26 verification sprint as confirmed facts land.
